Most beaches are 145–190 km away, so the key decision is not only which beach—but whether to make it a one-night circuit.
The short answer: Maravanthe is the best scenic road-trip coast, Padubidri and Kasarkod are the strongest managed family beaches, St Mary’s Island is the most distinctive island experience, and Murudeshwar is the best complete overnight coast.

Kodi Beach is one of the quieter coastal choices from Shivamogga and works best for travellers who want a low-key shoreline rather than a high-activity beach. At roughly 150 km, the drive is long enough that it makes sense as part of a Kundapura coastal day or one-night trip rather than a simple evening outing. Our wider Udupi guide can help with the surrounding coast.
Maravanthe is the strongest road-trip beach on this route because the Arabian Sea and Souparnika River create a landscape unlike an ordinary beach stop. From Shivamogga it works especially well as the anchor for a one-night Kundapura–Byndoor coastal circuit. The detailed Maravanthe guide is linked below.
Ottinene adds height and perspective to the coastal weekend. The attraction is the broader coast-and-estuary landscape rather than only a sandy beach, making it a strong companion to Maravanthe and the Byndoor side. Viewpoint access and local approach conditions should be checked before relying on one exact stopping point.
Malpe is the strongest activity-led beach choice in this Shimoga coastal set. The broad shoreline, marine activities and boat connection to St Mary’s Island give it more to do than a simple sunset stop. Water sports and boat operations are weather-dependent, so the beach works best as part of a planned Udupi overnight rather than a rigid same-day schedule.
St Mary’s Island is the most unusual coastal experience in this list because the destination is a protected basalt-island landscape rather than an ordinary beach. Access is by boat from the Malpe side and is seasonal; rough seas and monsoon conditions can stop services. There are no overnight stays on the island, so plan it as part of a Malpe–Udupi coastal day.
Kapu is the strongest lighthouse-and-sunset beach on the Udupi side. The lighthouse and rocky shoreline give the beach a clear visual identity, but the trip should not depend on being able to climb the lighthouse because access and timings can change. It fits naturally into a one-night Udupi–Kapu circuit from Shivamogga.
Padubidri is the strongest organised family beach in this Shimoga coastal set. Its current Blue Flag recognition highlights cleanliness, environmental management, safety and visitor facilities, making it especially useful for travellers who value a more structured beach environment. Because of the driving distance, combine it with Udupi or Kapu rather than treating it as a stand-alone quick trip.
The strongest complete outer coast inside the normal Shimoga radius; best treated as an overnight trip.
Murudeshwar is the strongest complete outer coastal weekend from Shivamogga. The seafront temple, beach and fair-weather marine activities create enough depth for a one-night trip. Netrani-side boat and water-sport operations are suspended in rough monsoon conditions, so the temple remains the reliable year-round anchor rather than the marine activities. Our detailed Murudeshwar guide is linked below.
