Murudeshwar is a coastal temple town on Kanduka Hill, surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, home to one of the tallest Shiva statues in the world at 123 feet. It's genuinely a destination that photographs well and travels well — a striking modern landmark built on top of a much older, shared pilgrimage story that stretches all the way to Gokarna.

The Statue, the Tower, and the Legend Behind Both

The 123-foot Shiva statue was completed in 2006, funded by businessman and philanthropist R.N. Shetty — a genuinely modern construction, despite standing on a site whose religious significance dates back much further. Murudeshwar is one of five sites in the Panchalinga Yatra, the same Ramayana-era Atmalinga legend told in depth on our Gokarna guide — according to tradition, fragments of the cloth covering used on the sacred Atmalinga landed at Gokarna, Sajjeshwar, Dhareshwar, Gunavanteshwar, and Murudeshwar, making all five part of one shared story.

Raja Gopura

A 20-storey tower, roughly 237 feet tall, with a lift to the upper floors — genuinely one of the best photography spots here, with panoramic views of the statue, temple complex, and sea.

Standing just behind the temple, a genuine relic of the Vijayanagara Empire, later renovated by Tipu Sultan — a real historical layer beneath the modern statue and tower.

Is Murudeshwar's Shiva statue ancient or modern?

The statue itself is modern — completed in 2006, funded by businessman and philanthropist R.N. Shetty. The temple site's religious significance, however, dates back much further, tied to the Ramayana-era Atmalinga legend. The statue and Raja Gopura are a recent addition to a much older sacred site, not the other way around.

How is Murudeshwar connected to Gokarna's temple legend?

Both are part of the Panchalinga Yatra, a circuit of five sites — Gokarna, Sajjeshwar, Dhareshwar, Gunavanteshwar, and Murudeshwar — tied to the same Ravana and Atmalinga legend. Can I go up the Raja Gopura tower?

Yes — a lift takes visitors up the 20-storey tower to an observation deck with panoramic views of the Shiva statue, temple complex, and the Arabian Sea. It's genuinely one of the best photography spots in Murudeshwar, alongside the statue itself.

There are quite a good number of private hotels here, ranging from 3-star to 4-star, several within walking distance of the temple with genuine sea views. Worth knowing: Murudeshwar doesn't currently have an official 5-star property.

Does Murudeshwar have luxury hotel options?

Not five-star properties as yet — the town's best options are genuinely good 3-star and 4-star hotels, several with sea-facing rooms, pools, and direct beach access, but no official 5-star property currently exists in Murudeshwar.
