That said, since the two towns are only 16km apart, most visitors reasonably combine them into a single, richer trip.
A Living Temple, Not a Ruin
Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 AD to commemorate the Hoysala victory over the Cholas, the Chennakeshava Temple took 103 years to complete — and unlike many Hoysala sites, it never stopped being used.

Still actively worshipped today, with regular rituals — expect a genuine devotional atmosphere alongside the architecture, not just a museum-like visit. Seven layers of exterior friezes depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Kappe Chennigaraya Temple
A smaller shrine within the same complex, dedicated by the queen — easy to miss if you rush, worth the extra ten minutes.
Visit Belur before Halebid, not after. Belur typically draws more visitors than Halebid, so seeing it first — earlier in the day — means less crowding around the carvings. Government-approved guides are available at the entrance if you want the stories behind the sculptures explained rather than just the architecture itself.
