The Hoysala Empire (10th-14th century) produced some of the most intricate stone sculpture in the world — a style characterised by horizontal bands of carved friezes covering every surface of their temples. Belur and Halebid are the twin capitals of this remarkable architectural tradition, now on India's tentative UNESCO World Heritage list.
Chennakeshava Temple, Belur (5-min walk)
Built by Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 AD to celebrate his victory over the Cholas, the Chennakeshava Temple took 103 years to complete. It is the only Hoysala temple still in active use for worship. The outer walls carry some of the most extraordinary stone carving in India — 42 Shala Bhanjika (celestial dancer) bracket figures in different poses, each wearing different jewellery and expression. The panel carvings show scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, elephants, horses, lotus scrolls and Hoysala lion emblems in continuous horizontal bands.
Hoysaleshwara Temple, Halebid (16km)
The Hoysaleshwara Temple at Halebid — on India's tentative UNESCO list — is a twin-shrined temple dedicated to Shiva. The outer walls carry over 240 horizontal bands of carvings — elephants, lions, horses, scrollwork, scenes from the epics, and the Hoysala emblem — running continuously around the entire temple perimeter. The Archaeological Museum within the complex has exceptional sculpture finds.
Shravanabelagola (80km)
The 18-metre Bahubali (Gomateshwara) monolith at Shravanabelagola — the world's largest monolithic statue — is accessible as a day trip from Belur. The 614-step climb to the hilltop and the scale of the statue make this one of Karnataka's most memorable experiences.
