About Hotel Mayura Shantala
Hotel Mayura Shantala in Halebid shares the defining characteristic of its sister hotel in Belur — it is positioned directly opposite the main temple. In this case, the Hoysaleshwara Temple complex, on India's tentative UNESCO World Heritage list, is a 2-minute walk across the road from the hotel entrance. No other accommodation in Halebid has this proximity.
The property is a compact cluster of cottage-style rooms in a small garden compound — 3 AC double rooms and 1 non-AC 4-bed family room, with an outdoor restaurant and adequate parking. The garden atmosphere is described as peaceful and serene by guests. Indian hornbills and parrots are visible in the large trees on the campus.
Important: With only 4 rooms this property fills quickly. Alcohol consumption is not permitted on the premises. Book as far in advance as possible.
Hoysaleshwara Temple & Halebid
Halebid (Halebeedu — meaning "old capital") was the royal seat of the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century. The Hoysaleshwara Temple complex is the crowning achievement of Hoysala architecture — a twin-shrined temple built over a period of more than 80 years and never fully completed.
Hoysaleshwara Temple — 240 Bands of Stone Carving
The outer walls of the Hoysaleshwara Temple carry a continuous horizontal band of carvings running around the entire perimeter — approximately 240 bands in total. From bottom to top: elephants (symbolising stability), horses (speed), scrolling foliage, makaras (mythical sea creatures), scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and geese. The Hoysala emblem — a warrior stabbing a lion — appears repeatedly. The quality of the carving — the delicacy of jewellery, the expressiveness of faces, the variety of poses — is extraordinary for stone work of the 12th century.
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Survey of India museum within the temple complex has an excellent collection of Hoysala sculpture finds — bracket figures, Natarajas, Vishnu panels and inscription stones. Free entry with the temple ticket.
Kedareshwara Temple & Jain Temples
The Kedareshwara Temple (200m from hotel) is a smaller but beautifully preserved Hoysala shrine nearby. The Halebid Jain temples — Parshvanatha Basadi with its polished pillars — are within the same walking circuit.

Location — the defining advantage
"A cluster of cottage rooms in a small compound with a garden — an atmosphere of peace and serenity. Well-furnished AC room with two sofas, dressing table and spacious bathroom. The outdoor restaurant is pleasant and the meals are homely and good."
Cottage-style, peaceful atmosphere
"The large trees attract Indian hornbills and parrots — a lovely morning surprise. Staff are very helpful and the manager is knowledgeable about local Hoysala heritage. An ideal location for those who want to spend more than a day researching and exploring the temple."

Padaki's booking tips
Book as far in advance as possible — only 4 rooms. October to March fills quickly.
Note: alcohol consumption is not permitted on the premises — this is a KSTDC policy at this property.
Visit Hoysaleshwara Temple at sunrise (6:00-7:00 AM) — the low morning light brings out the relief carvings dramatically. No entry fee and almost no visitors at this hour.
Hire an ASI-approved guide at the temple entrance — the iconography of the 240 carving bands is enormously enriched by explanation. Ask specifically for the Ramayana and Mahabharata panels.
Combine with Belur (16km) — Chennakeshava Temple is the twin site. Plan a morning at Halebid and afternoon at Belur (or vice versa).
The Kedareshwara Temple and Jain temples are a 5-minute walk from the hotel and worth 30 minutes each.
