Four rock-cut temples carved into the rust-red sandstone cliff face above Agastya Lake. Cave 1 (Shiva) — the unique 18-armed Nataraja striking 81 dance poses, and a large Ardhanareeshwara panel. Cave 2 (Vishnu) — a Trivikrama (Vishnu measuring the universe) panel. Cave 3 (Vishnu) — the largest and finest, with the most ornate carvings and a Vishnu on Garuda panel. Cave 4 (Jain) — Mahavira and Parshvanatha imagery. Steps lead up from Agastya Lake with views of the lake and the fortified hill above.
Pattadakal UNESCO World Heritage Site (22km)
The coronation capital of the Chalukya dynasty — designated UNESCO in 1987. Ten temples representing both Dravidian (South Indian) and Nagara (North Indian) architectural styles, an extraordinary demonstration of the synthesis of the two great temple-building traditions. The Virupaksha Temple is the finest individual structure — built to commemorate a Chalukya victory over the Pallavas.
Aihole — Cradle of Indian Temple Architecture (35km)
With over 125 temples built between 450 and 1100 AD, Aihole is where Indian temple architecture began its experiments. The Durga Temple with its apsidal plan, Lad Khan Temple (one of the earliest surviving structural temples), and the Ravanaphadhi cave temple are the highlights. The Aihole Archaeological Museum has excellent finds from the entire region.
