Gol Gumbaz — World's Second Largest Dome (2km)
Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, completed in 1656. The dome is 44 metres in diameter — the world's second largest after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The famous Whispering Gallery at the base of the dome carries a whisper clearly across 37 metres. The view from the gallery parapet across the Bijapur roofscape is extraordinary.
Ibrahim Rauza — The Taj Mahal of the Deccan (2.5km)
Ibrahim Rauza is the mausoleum of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, completed in 1627. Its exquisite proportions and intricate floral stonework led some historians to suggest that Taj Mahal architects visited and were inspired by it. The twin structures — tomb and mosque — mirror each other in a garden setting that is one of the finest in Deccan architecture.
Bara Kaman — The Unfinished Mausoleum (2km)
Bara Kaman (Twelve Arches) was intended to be the grandest mausoleum in Bijapur — according to legend, construction was halted when it was noticed that the shadow of its proposed dome would fall on Gol Gumbaz. The 12 standing arches in a geometric pattern are now one of Bijapur's most photographed structures.
Malik-e-Maidan — The World's Largest Medieval Cannon (1.4km)
Malik-e-Maidan (Lord of the Plains) is a 55-tonne bronze cannon mounted on the city walls — the largest medieval cannon in the world. Cast in 1549, it was brought to Bijapur as war booty. The muzzle is shaped as a lion's head devouring an elephant.
