The Legend Behind the Stone

Known as "Kallina Kote" (Stone Fortress), Chitradurga Fort spans roughly 1,500 acres across granite hills, with seven concentric walls and nineteen gateways — originally built by the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, then expanded significantly by the Nayakas.

During Hyder Ali's siege, Onake Obavva discovered enemy soldiers infiltrating through this narrow rock crevice while her husband, a guard, was away. Armed only with a wooden pestle, she single-handedly killed each soldier who tried to enter until he returned — the fort's central, most-told story.

The Rainwater Harvesting System

A genuinely clever engineering feature — interconnected reservoirs that collected and stored rainwater, with overflow cascading down to lower tanks and eventually the moat.

Go early — the fort has almost no shade. Most of the site is exposed granite with direct sun. Arriving right around 6 AM opening gets you cooler temperatures, better photography light, and a head start before the heat sets in.

During Hyder Ali's siege of the fort, Onake Obavva discovered enemy soldiers infiltrating through a narrow rock crevice while her husband, a guard, was away. Armed only with an onake (a wooden pestle used for pounding grain), she single-handedly killed each soldier who attempted to enter until her husband returned. The crevice, Onake Obavva Kindi, is preserved as the fort's most-told story.
