The Bat & the Fort
The Barapede Caves, inside Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary near the Goa border, are genuinely one of the more remarkable wildlife stories in Indian conservation. The Wroughton's Free-tailed Bat was first identified here in 1913 — and for nearly 90 years afterward, this was the only known location on the entire planet where the species existed. It wasn't until 2001 that researchers found a second population, in Meghalaya, northeast India. It remains one of the rarest bats known to science, protected under Schedule I of India's Wildlife Protection Act — the highest level of protection the law offers.
