Bandipur Is Part of a Much Bigger Forest
Bandipur was declared a tiger reserve in 1973, one of the original nine parks brought under Project Tiger — before that, it was the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Mysore. Today it spans roughly 870-880 sq km along the Mysore-Ooty road, at the meeting point of the Western and Eastern Ghats.
What makes it genuinely significant: Bandipur, Nagarhole (which includes the Kabini zone), Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, and Wayanad in Kerala together form the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — India's first biosphere reserve, and the largest single habitat for wild elephants anywhere in South Asia. This is exactly why Bandipur and Kabini so often appear together in the same trip itinerary — they're not neighbouring parks, they're pieces of one continuous forest.

The Safari & Road Rules
Jeep and canter (bus) safaris run twice daily, generally in a morning window (roughly 6:30-9 AM) and an afternoon window (roughly 3:30-6 PM) — exact timings vary slightly by season and source. As with Kabini, jeep safaris are mostly tied to JLR (Jungle Lodges & Resorts) availability, while canter safaris are Forest Department-run and open to the public via online booking or in-person at the gate.
What You'll Actually See
Elephants, gaur, spotted deer, and a genuinely strong bird population (over 200 recorded species) are commonly spotted. Tigers and leopards are present and regularly photographed here, but as everywhere in this forest system, no sighting can be guaranteed on any single safari.

The highest point in the park, topped by a temple to Lord Krishna that draws pilgrims year-round — a genuine cultural stop alongside the wildlife focus, with panoramic forest views from the summit.
Best Time to Visit
March-May (dry season) offers the best visibility as animals gather near shrinking water sources. November-January suits birdwatchers, when migratory species arrive. Monsoon (June-October) brings lush greenery but harder sightings.

Mistakes Travellers Actually Make Here
Driving through at night without checking the road closure. Arriving after the NH766 cutoff means being turned back or stuck until morning — plan your drive time around this, not around it.
Assuming any nearby stay automatically includes a Jeep safari. Bandipur Safari Lodge's current overnight packages include scheduled Jeep safari sessions; with other stays, confirm the safari arrangement separately.
Treating it as a quick one-hour stop between Mysore and Ooty. A rushed drive-through misses the point entirely — this deserves at least one proper safari, not a highway glance.
